What is GCE?

General Certificate Examination (GCE) is an assessment conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for private or external candidates. Private or external candidates are candidates that register for GCE without being admitted as a student of any school. While GCE is specifically for private candidates, secondary school students can also write this exam. Those who couldn’t do the exam with internal candidates can register for GCE.

GCE Registration Process

Typically, private candidates sitting for GCE should register online. It’s best to register on time before the deadline. Candidates will have to pay a particular amount as a registration fee at authorized banks and accredited agents. Once you pay the fee, you will receive a registration PIN and VCD containing details about the examination. Below is a list of banks to make your payment.

Note: You may have to pay a commission fee of Five Hundred Naira (N500.00) to the bank or accredited agent. The board issues you a registration PIN after making payment. You can use the PIN for the registration process. Proceed to the website to complete your registration. You need to conclude registration within two weeks of starting the process. Ensure you enter correctly your names, dates of birth, subjects, and passport photographs in the provided field. Upon completion of your registration, you will need to print the Admission Notice/ Photo Card which will serve as a means of identification during the examination. On the Photo Card is the Result Checker PIN which you can use to check your results once it’s out.

Walk-In-Candidates

Walk-in candidates are candidates that register for GCE after the deadline. If you couldn’t meet the deadline, you can register 24 hours before the scheduled time of paper you want to write. Walk-in candidates will need to pay about 30,500 as a registration fee.

Special Needs Candidates

Like other candidates, special needs candidates will register online as well. However, these candidates should indicate their physical challenges while completing their registration.

Registration Guidelines

  • Registration fees are not non-refundable.
  • Go through the information VCD before commencing registration.
  • Ensure you print the examination timetable after registration.
  • Submit your registration form with 275 by 314 pixels passport photographs. The photographs should be of good quality and taken on other backgrounds besides red or blue. The examination board will reject registration forms that don’t meet the specified requirements.
  • You’re not allowed to wear any professional uniform. Wear only mufti to the examination hall. You shouldn’t wear weapons as well.
  • Study the syllabuses, regulations and timetable. Use the registration PIN to download these materials from the official website.
  • If you sit for an examination in more than one centre, your results will be cancelled.
  • You’re not allowed to smoke in the examination hall.
  • Mobile phones and/or electronic gadgets are prohibited in the examination hall. Candidates who flout the rule will have their results cancelled.
  • Ensure you fill your application form correctly before uploading it on the website as the council will not be held responsible for any error. You won’t be able to make any corrections once you submit your application.
  • You need a valid email address and telephone number for the registration process.
  • Go to the examination hall with your original cards.
  • Engaging in examination malpractice will lead to the cancellation of your results and prosecution.
  • All candidates should adhere to all COVID-19 regulations.

Note: GCE is conducted twice a year. The GCE first series usually commences after the WAEC exam. Registration for the second series begins early in the year. If you can’t apply for the first series, make sure you apply for the second series.

GCE Registration Requirements

Private candidates that wish to sit for GCE should meet all the necessary requirements. The following is required for GCE registration.

While English Language and Mathematics are compulsory for GCE, you can choose other subjects depending on your subject combination and course of study. Typically, you can choose a minimum of 7 subjects and a maximum of 9 subjects. Below is GCE approved subjects.

How to Create GCE Registration Profile

If you want to register for GCE, you’ll need to first create a profile with these steps:

  • Obtain your GCE registration PIN. Log on to the official website to generate your PIN.
  • Click on Start Registration
  • Enter your preferred username
  • Click on Check Availability to know if the name is available or has been taken by someone else.
  • Enter a strong password that you can remember easily.
  • Re-enter your password for confirmation.
  • Enter your PIN and click on Continue to proceed.

How to Register GCE First/Second Series

Regardless if you’re registering for GCE first/second series, you can register for GCE with the following steps:

  • After obtaining your PIN, you can go ahead to create your profile and capture your biometrics.
  • Your profile information and biometrics must be similar.
  • Ensure you print your photocard after capturing biometrics.
  • Go to the portal and click on continue registration to complete registration.

Note: You have the option of doing your biometrics first before returning to the portal to click on CONTINUE REGISTRATION. Alternatively, you can click on *START REGISTRATION first, complete the registration form and save it. After saving the page, you can proceed to do your biometrics.
