Sarah Omotunde Alade, a Banker, Financial professional, Administrator and Economist, was born in Offa, Kwara state to the Alaba family. She came into the limelight when she was appointed acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Before this time, she had worked as a lecturer at the University of Ilorin and had taken directorial positions in the CBN. She was appointed as the CBN’s acting Governor following the suspension of the then CBN governor Sanusi, by the president.

Early life of Sarah Alade


Sarah Alade was born in Offa, Kwara state. Not much is known of how she grew up as she came into the limelight after she was appointed as the acting Governor of the CBN.

Sarah Alade attended the University of Ife now Obafemi Awolowo University and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree(Hons) in Economics in 1976. She proceeded to bag a Masters Degree (M.Comm) at the University of Melbourne in Australia seven years after obtaining her first degree. She continued her academia and obtained a PhD in Management Science at the University of Ilorin in the year 1991.

Sarah Alade’s Career

Sarah Alade’s career began in 1977 after the completion of her first degree, with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Ilorin, Kwara state. She later joined the University of Ilorin as a lecturer after she bagged her PhD in 1991. Two years after, she left lecturing and became an Assistant Director in the research department of the Central Bank of Nigeria. She served in this position for three years and became the head of the Federal Government Finance Office and head of the Fiscal Analysis Division between 1996-2004. In May 2004, she was appointed the Director of Banking Operations Department and subsequently became the chairman of the board of directors of the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System and secretary of the NPSC.

In 2007, Sarah Alade became the deputy governor (Economic Policy) of the CBN and was later appointed the acting Governor by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014 the previous governor, Lamido Sanusi’s suspension from the bank. She retired as a deputy governor of the bank in 2017 and was appointed the special adviser to the President on Finance and Economy in 2019 by President Mohammadu Buhari.
