Oscar N. Onyema is the Group Chief Executive Officer of The Nigerian Stock Exchange PLC and the Chairman of Central Securities Clearing System. He is also a Council Member of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers of Nigeria and the President of the African Securities Exchanges Association.

Mr Oscar Onyema after his secondary school education,went ahead to study for his bachelor degree in Computer Engineering at the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He also has an MBA in Finance and Investments which he got while studying at Baruch College, New York City and attended Harvard Business School for a Advanced Management Program.
Mr Onyema holds Financial Industry Regulatory Authority licenses, and he is a part of the Security Traders Association of New York, and Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Career
Mr Onyema is the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Stock Exchange,but before he became the CEO, he served for over 20 years in the United States financial markets, where he helped in managing market structure initiatives, products and securities exchange businesses and the Nigerian information technology sector.
He was also Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of the American Stock Exchange (Amex), which he joined in 2001. He was the first person of colour to hold that position.
In the year 2009, Onyema put in place Market Strategists LLC and acted as a consultant under the Gerson Lehrman Group platform in the United States. He contributed positively and his consultations enabled decision makers at investment firms and corporations better understand products, services, companies, and issues in global financial markets.
He was involved in the New York Mercantile Exchange where he was assigned several positions and he managed severalmarket structure initiatives, and Data Processing Maintenance and Services Ltd. He has also worked as Adjunct Lecturer of Economics at Pace University, New York.
He is the Chairman, West African Capital Market Integration Council; Chairman of Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) Plc., the clearing house for the Nigerian capital market; Council member of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers of Nigeria (CIS); President of the African Securities Exchanges Association, and a Global Agenda Council member of the World Economic Forum. He also served on the boards of all NSE subsidiaries.
Internationally, Mr Onyema serves on the London Stock Exchange Group Africa Advisory Group (LAAG) and is part of the Thompson Reuters Africa Advisory Network and has served as a Global Agenda Council member of World Economic Forum (WEF).
Regionally, Onyema plays an important role in the decision making of West African Capital Market integration council (WACMIC), where he was the ex-chairman and the African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA), which he is the current president.
Achievements
- 2012: named Man of the Year ,by ThisDay newspaper.
- 2014: he was made an Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in “recognition of his contribution to economic development, the transformation of The Nigerian Stock Exchange and the Nigerian capital markets”.
- 2015: he was awarded the most innovative CEO of the year 2014 by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry in January.
- Mr Oscar holds the traditional title of Öchiligwe of Ogwu-Ikpele and founded the Oscar N. Onyema foundation. A foundation he fully funds as a means to give back to indigent community members through education.
