Professor Bolaji Aluko is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and the first Vice-Chancellor of the then newly established Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Nigeria from 2011, the year of appointment till the expiration of his tenure in 2016.

Personal Life and Education

Professor Bolaji Aluko born Mobolaji Ebenezer Aluko was born on the 2nd of April, 1955 and he is now 66 years of age. He was born to the family of Educationists, Professor Sam Aluko, one of the early professors, Ekiti State produced. Bolaji Aluko is a Native of Ekiti State, Nigeria with dual Nigerian / American Citizenship. Coming from a family where education was taken to be the top priority, he could not have attained less than his father did. After his Primary and Secondary Education, he proceeded to the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University for his first degree where he badged a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering in 1976. Stories have it that he graduated with a first-class, which landed him admission opportunity for his Master’s degree at Imperial College, London in 1978 after which he continued to the University of California, Santa Barbara for his PhD degree in 1983 and his Post-doctorial work at the State University of New York, Buffalo in 1984.

Professor Mobolaji Aluko is married to Mrs Remi Aluko (nee Ilugbusi) whom he has five children with. He is the uncle of professional footballer Sone Aluko who plays for [fulham] in the Football League Championship, and Eniola Aluko who plays for Chelsea Ladies of the FA WSL. He is an activist and frequent commentator on Nigerian and African affairs.

Career

Before Professor Bolaji Aluko was appointed Vice-Chancellor, he worked as a professor of Chemical engineering at Howard University, Washington DC rising from being an Assistant Professor in 1984 to becoming an Associate Professor in 1988 and then his promotion to a Full Professor in 1994. He had his sabbatical teaching and research stints at various times at the University of Washington in Seattle; Material Science Department in 1992 and then the University of Maryland, College Park in Chemical engineering in 1993. Professor Bolaji then became Chair of the Chemical engineering department from 1994 – 2002  and director of Howard’s Engineering Coalition of Schools for Excellence and Leadership (ECSEL) Program from 1991 – 2002. He then went for another sabbatical teaching and research stints at the University of Ado-Ekiti now Ekiti State University, Nigeria at the  Mechanical engineering department in 2002.

In February 2011, he was appointed to be the inaugural Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Otuoke in Bayelsa State, Nigeria and completed a single five-year tenure successfully in February 2016. While in the position he controlled the growth of the University from a virgin zone of 200 hectares to having two campuses, one as the main campus and the other as a Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Center, over sixty new buildings were completed and others were ongoing. Having nearly two thousand students and more than one thousand, five hundred academic members of staff, with all the initial twelve academic programmes being accredited by the National Universities Commission as of November 2015.

  • He has researched in areas of Mathematical modelling, Materials, Information technology, Rector engineering, Energy systems and education pedagogy under which Professor Bolaji Aluko had published several research papers in refereed Journals.
  • In 2002 he received a US patent in coal cleaning technology.
  • Professor Bolaji Aluko has been Lead Consultant and Coordinator of the Linkages of Experts and Academics in the Diaspora (LEAD) Program at the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Nigeria.
  • He is also Principal Academic Consultant and Member of the Board of AfriHUB (Nig.) Ltd., an ICT resource provider for universities in Nigeria; Energy and Climate Change.
  • He is a Consultant for Triple-E Systems.
  • President and CEO of Alondex Applied Technology Systems Ltd.,
  • Director of Acoca Medical Services Ltd., a Health Management and Consultancy outfit.
  • Currently, he is Vice-President (Administration) of American Hospital Limited
  •  President/Vice-Chancellor Pro-Tem of the proposed private American University of Medical Sciences (AuMedSc), Abuja.
