Adebayo Adelabu, grandson of Alhaji Adegoke Adelabu aka Penkelemesi, a very notable personnel in the Southwest region of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Adebayo was once the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Early Life

Grandson of Late Nationalist Politician, Alhaji Adegoke Adelabu aka Penkelemesi , Adebayo was born to a Senior Banker, Aderibigbe Adelabu of Oke-Oluokun compound, Kudeti area of Ibadan South East local government. Adebayo spent most of his childhood with his grandmother after the passing away of his father when he was barely 4 years of age. Although he wasn’t born with a silver spoon as supposed because of his grandfather’s affluence, it instead opened doors for him.

Education

Adebayo attended Ibadan Municipal Government primary school, Agodi, Ibadan from 1976 – 1982, then went on to Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan from 1982 – 1987. He then furthered more, graduating with a first class degree in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University (University of Ife).
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), a Fellow of Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, also an Associate Member of the Institute of Directors of Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Adebayo has taken up professional courses in various business schools, 28th the likes of Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Columbia, Kellogg’s, Euromoney and the University of London respectively.

Career

A former Deputy Governor (Operations) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Adebayo was appointed by the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in February 2014, where the held the office for about five years. Prior to this, Adebayo was an Executive Director / Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of First Bank of Nigeria PLC (FBN).
Adebayo held positions of General Manager as the West African Regional Head of Finance and Strategy (Consumer Banking Business) for Standard Chartered Bank. He had his professional training with Price Water house (now, Price Water House Coopers), an international firm of Chartered Accountants and Management Consultants where he worked for seven years. He led and managed various audit and consultancy engagements for large banks and non-bank financial institutions within and outside Nigerian when he was with the firm.


Adebayo Adelabu was also on secondment to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for one year (1999), when he led the Finance team on the CBN re-engineering and corporate renewal project tagged Project Eagles. In 2000, he left the firm as an Audit Manager and Senior Consultant to join First Atlantic Bank as the Financial Controller and Group Head of Risk Management and Controls. He also held higher positions of Chief Inspector of the Bank in 2002 and Group Head of National Public Sector Business in 2003 while at First Atlantic Bank.


As at 2018, he was serving as the Chairman, Board of Directors of the Financial Institution Training Center (FITC) and also sat on the board of the Assets Management Cooperation of Nigeria (AMCON), the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC) and the NIRSAL.
In 2019, Adebayo Adelabu resigned from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) with the intention of running as the Governor of Oyo State under the political party of All Progressive Congress (APC) but lost to Engineer Seyi Makinde, the present Governor of the State.

Adebayo Adelabu is married to Oluseyi Adelabu with children. He is also a philanthropist with Bayo Adelabu Foundation as his platform, he has alot with BAF since it’s birth around 16 years ago. A businessman with investments spanning through the hospitality, agricultural, entertainment and real estate industries, he is the Group Chairman of Bayse One Group of Hotels, Bayse One Farm and the Best Western Plus Hotels, Ibadan.

Awards and Honours

Adebayo has alot of notable recognition from all over, most of which came along as a result of dedication in his works. With the honour of Ibadan Distinguished Fellowship Award (2010) and a Chieftaincy title of Agbaakin Parakoyi of Ibadanland; amongst others in play.
